Enel Green Power S.p.A
Organisation Introduction
Enel is a multinational company, present in about 30 countries. It is the largest private operator in renewables in terms of installed capacity, serves the largest number of customers in the world with its distribution networks, and has the largest customer base globally.
Enel Green Power develops and manages power generated from renewable resources worldwide: more than 1300 power plants and 64.7 GW of installed renewable capacity from a mix of renewable resources, including wind, solar, hydroelectric and geothermal. By 2027 it plans to build approximately 12 GW of renewable capacity, including 2.3 GW of BESS.
Enel X focuses on energy supply, energy management services, and public and private electric mobility, with a portfolio of products and value-added services to promote independent and sustainable energy use. Supports residential, commercial, and municipal clients with innovative solutions that drive digitalization and electrification, creating new value through smarter energy usage and transportation.
Why EPISODE?
The development of sodium-ion batteries within EPISODE project fits perfectly with Enel’s strategy to promote sustainable and efficient energy storage solutions. Sodium-ion batteries offer a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries thanks to the use of more accessible and less expensive raw materials, that implies lower batteries overall costs while ensuring a lower dependence from critical raw materials (like lithium and cobalt).
Enel joins this project to support the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and strengthen its commitment to environmental sustainability, accordingly to its mission to lead the global energy transition. Innovation in energy storage system through the sodium-ion technology is in line with Enel’s vision, that promote renewables energy resources proliferation and power grid resiliency improvement through the integration with energy storage system.
What in EPISODE?
Enel Green Power will develop a business case for industrial scale systems based on Sodium-ion batteries in Front-of-the-Meter applications and will define the related system integration requirements. Additionally, at the Innovation Lab in Catania, it will test Sodium-ion battery cells and modules prototypes to evaluate their degradation under different conditions, characterize the technology features and validate the related performances.
Enel X will perform tests on integrated systems for residential use to gather data for performance validation. The primary goal is to evaluate the possible usage of this technology for residential customers, ensuring its effectiveness and reliability for home energy storage. This work supports the broader goal of integrate advanced battery technologies into everyday applications to promote the electrification of residential customers.
