The latest progress within the EPISODE project on advanced binder solutions for sodium-ion battery electrodes was recently presented during the 250th ECS Meeting, held from 25 to 29 October 2026.
The oral presentation, delivered on behalf of Arkema, focused on the challenges of processing highly alkaline layered oxide cathode materials. Particular attention was given to the development of new Kynar® binder technologies and their potential to improve slurry stability, electrode processing and electrochemical performance.
The presentation also highlighted recent progress in binder optimisation for hard carbon anodes. These developments are important for achieving reliable electrode manufacturing while maintaining the electrochemical performance required for sodium-ion battery applications.
Beyond the material-level developments, the presentation demonstrated how the work contributes to the broader objectives of EPISODE, aiming to improve sodium-ion battery performance, but also to ensure that the developed technologies can be manufactured at industrial scale in a cost-effective and sustainable way.
The presentation attracted interest from both academic and industrial participants. Discussions focused in particular on the project’s cost-related KPIs, the strategy for industrial implementation, and the potential of sodium-ion batteries to meet future energy storage needs. The exchange highlighted the growing interest in battery technologies that combine technical performance with economic viability and manufacturability. Overall, the positive reception confirmed the relevance of the EPISODE approach.
